Exploring The Wines Of
Bordeaux
Global Wine Tour will be exploring the wines of
Bordeaux on September 10th!
Join Steve Thurlow, one of Canada’s foremost experts on the subject of wine, as we spend an evening exploring the most important wine regions of Bordeaux. You’ll sample 8 different wines from this very celebrated and historic wine producing region. You will learn about its most important wine regions, and what makes Bordeaux wines unique from similar wines from other parts of the world. Bordeaux has its own very unique wine styles, and many winemakers have unsuccessfully tried to copy these around the world.
A Bordeaux wine is any wine produced in the Bordeaux region of France. Over 700 million bottles of Bordeaux wine are produced every year, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine, to the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world. Bordeaux wine is made in over 9,000 wineries called chateaux from the grapes of over 13,000 grape growers. There are 57 different appellations of Bordeaux wine.
The Bordeaux region of France is the 2nd largest wine growing area in the world, with over 284,000 acres under vine. Only the Languedoc wine region with 617,750 acres under vine is larger. Located halfway between the North Pole and the equator, there is more vineyard land planted in Bordeaux than in all of Germany, and ten times the amount planted in New Zealand!
The major reason for the success of winemaking in the Bordeaux region is the excellent environment for growing vines. The geological foundation of the region is limestone, leading to a soil structure that is heavy in calcium. The Gironde estuary dominates the regions along with its tributaries, the Garonne and the Dordogne rivers, and together irrigate the land and provide a maritime climate for the region.
